In Other Parts of the World: Iran’s Got a New President

Via BBC. Iran has elected a new president, Hassan Rouhani, who ran on the platform of “upholding justice across the country and civil rights", and suggested that the election result was a “victory for reform " and a “victory of moderation over extremism". Mr. Rouhani is a shia cleric who held some top government positions, including chief nuclear negotiator. He is hopeful that the nuclear issue and sanctions would be resolved during his time in office. How Iran can move toward democracy remains uncertain, as the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is still in power. How and if a theocracy can be peacefully transformed into a secular democracy is a big question.
